BettaTech Learning Center | Successfully held the first session of the External Fixation and Limb Orthopedics Workshop

In this early summer when the grass is long and the birds are flying, the “First Course on External Fixation and Limb Orthopedics” was held in Shenzhen, hosted by the Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital and co-organized by Wuxi Betta Medical. This training course specially invited Professor Chen Jianwen’s team to provide an excellent learning platform for students from Jiangxi, Guangdong, Xinjiang, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, as well as Zimbabwe and Panama, through various optimized teaching methods for clinical application of external fixation, such as small class lectures, workshop practice, teaching rounds, surgical videos, and surgical observation. The teaching was also conducted through online synchronous live broadcast.



External fixation technology, as an important treatment method in the field of orthopedics, has unique advantages in the treatment of fractures, joint injuries, and other diseases. The six-degree-of-freedom external fixation frame (represented by Taylor frame) has powerful advantages in the treatment of complex fractures, nonunion, and deformity correction compared to traditional internal and external fixation techniques. It can be said to be the crown jewel in the field of Ilizarov external fixation technology. In order to improve the technical level and operational capabilities of doctors, Wuxi Betta Medical has decided to hold this training course to cultivate more excellent talents in the field of digital external fixation technology in the medical industry, and promote the development, innovation, and clinical application of six-degree-of-freedom intelligent external fixation technology in China.



The training session has invited Professor Chen Jianwen as the distinguished chairman. He is a renowned expert in the field of external fixation technology, both domestically and internationally. Professor Chen has accumulated extensive experience and profound academic achievements in the research and application of external fixation technology. The team of lecturers led by Professor Chen consists of several senior experts, including Doctor Guo Yue from the affiliated rehabilitation hospital of the National Rehabilitation Assistive Device Research Center, Doctor Wang Renming from Shenzhen Zhengkang Orthopedic Hospital, as well as lecturers from the bone external fixation research, design, medical, and nursing fields from Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital and Shenzhen Zhengkang Orthopedic Hospital. With the rich research experience of Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital and the National Rehabilitation Assistive Device Research Center, as well as the accumulation of clinical experience from the two places and three hospitals, we are determined to provide the students with a clear path to the digitized external fixation.

The training program offers a variety of teaching methods, aiming to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience to provide comprehensive training for the students. Firstly, Professor Chen Jianwen and other lecturers introduced the students to the basic theory, operational skills, and clinical applications of external fixation techniques through small class lectures. Professor Chen Jianwen’s lecture topic was “Fundamentals, Clinical Applications, and Innovations of Taylor Spatial Frame,” analyzing the foundation of the Taylor spatial frame from the origins of external fixation, the application of Ilizarov technique, and the powerful advancement of digital revolution in the field of external fixation.

In terms of clinical application, Professor Chen Jianwen demonstrated the advantages of the Taylor external fixator in the treatment of complex fractures and deformity correction through sharing fascinating cases. Doctor Guo Yue’s lecture is titled “Measurement and Techniques of Taylor Frame Parameters”, in which he detailedly introduced the methods of deformity measurement and Taylor frame measurement based on his experience of measuring thousands of Taylor frames. Following that, courses such as “Application Patterns of Taylor Frame in Upper Limb” and “Application Patterns of Taylor Frame in Lower Limb”, “Surgical Procedure and Coordination of Taylor Frame”, and “Perioperative Care of Taylor Frame” took turns to appear. The advantage of small-class teaching is that in the classroom, students can interrupt the course at any time, actively ask questions, and have in-depth communication and discussion with the lecturers, deepening their understanding and mastery of knowledge. The originally dull theoretical knowledge gradually gained acceptance by the students with the help of easy-to-understand language and fascinating cases. The full-process training on the Taylor external fixator ensures that students can immediately engage in clinical practice after completing their studies.

In addition, the training course also includes workshop sessions, allowing students to have hands-on experience and practice under the guidance of experts. By simulating surgical procedures based on real cases, students can better grasp the operational procedures and techniques of external fixation, thus improving their technical skills and operational abilities.

Teaching rounds is another important part of the training program. Professor Chen Jianwen and other lecturers led the students to visit the clinical wards and conduct bedside rounds, allowing the students to witness and understand the practical application of external fixation techniques in clinical settings. By combining with clinical practice, the students are able to better understand and apply the knowledge they have learned, deepening their understanding of external fixation techniques.

By observing the expert’s operating skills and thought process, students can better understand the practical application and key points of external fixation techniques, and improve their clinical thinking and judgment abilities.
